Going Green and saving on Energy

The media have made sure that we are all fully aware of how our day to day lives make an impact upon the environment and our world. However, not all of us have fully embraced the spirit of going green just yet. Often it feels like too much of an effort or simply too much of an uphill battle. However, in order to change this attitude, it is crucial to remember that each and every minute alteration that you make to your lifestyle can add up to much greater changes for our planet.

The added incentive is, of course, that by trying to use less energy in your home you will also save yourself some money on gas and electricity prices. In the face of the recession, this is something that we will all welcome as a way to alleviate the current financial strain. Going green doesn’t need to be too stressful either – here are a few very simple ideas:

    1. The British Gas website informs us that switching off unused lights can save up to twenty seven pounds per year. Whilst this may not sound like very much, when combined with other energy saving techniques, it will add up over time. What is more, if everyone tries to remember to turn off unused lights this will save the country a huge amount of energy in total.

    2. Insulating your home more effectively might involve some initial expense but the long term savings will far outweigh this outlay. What is more, better insulating your home will add value to your property and make it more attractive to potential buyers should you ever choose to sell.

    3. Leaving your computer on standby could cost you up to £10 per year. If you have more than one computer in your household then obviously costs will be greater. Remembering to shut it down is another simple way to save money on your energy bills.

    4. Similarly, leaving the TV and digital boxes on standby could cost you up to £30 per year. Simply turning it off, and making sure that you instruct everyone else in your house to do so, will help to keep our environment healthy, as well as saving you money.

These simple lifestyle changes can make a real difference to your bank balance. Think about going green this year and see if you notice the financial gains. For more information, check out the British Gas website to see how their gas and electricity prices compare across the UK.
