| THE TRUE COST OF SMART METERS In a trial of smart meters in Australia, users found that their bills increased sharply because meters allow suppliers to charge a higher unit rate at peak times when households most need the energy. Only a few items, such as dishwashers, can be timed for night use, when rates are lower. The declared cost of the UK smart meter program was £11 billion a couple of years ago, which works out at about £450 per household. The only way this can be paid for is by adding the price to customer bills.
